December 10, 2019 Meeting

Immediately following the regular meeting we will hold the annual Christmas Social.

November 12 2019 Meeting

Speaker was Elizabeth Larsen, a junior at McIntosh High School with creditable scholastic credentials.  Her presentation addressed social studies education in general and more specifically at McIntosh.  She started by stating that the state of social studies education nationally is “dismal to say the least.”  A 2018 survey showed that on 13% of respondents did not knew when the United States Constitution was written.  Additionally 60% of respondents did not know what countries the Allies fought in World War II.  She hypothesized that perhaps we are dealing with a systematic breakdown in the education system.  She went on to explain why social studies were de-emphasized in the education system and presented data supporting her hypothesis.  She concluded by sharing her recent experience competing in the John Locke Institute Essay Campaign.  This is an international contest aimed at the best and brightest with entrants from over 100 nations.  As her essay was rated Commendable she was invited to and attended an award dinner in New College, Oxford UK.
